Chapter Thirteen

THE FOLLOWING DAY WAS Saturday, and Chloe had spent the night at my house. I was snoozing with Oliver on my stomach when Chloe burst into the room.

“What?” I screamed and sat up. This sent Oliver flying to the foot of the bed where his fur stood on end as he hissed in confusion.

“Why are you screaming?” Chloe asked, tilting her head.

“Why are you bursting into my room like that? Is the house on fire?”

“No. Better.” She jumped onto my bed and waved her phone at me.

“Better? Well, that’s not a very high bar that you’ve set.”

“Look.” She pointed at her phone.

I blinked the sleep away as Oliver settled down. Neither of us was excited to be so rudely awakened. And then I saw it. There was an ad on the local online version of the town newspaper advertising a yard sale. Normally, a yard sale doesn’t excite me, but I noticed the address right away. It was Vivian and Edmund Bushes’ house.

I looked at Chloe. “I wonder what he’s selling?”

She nodded. “I wonder, too. Get dressed. We’ve got a yard sale to go to.”

I threw the covers off myself, covering Oliver with them, and jumped out of bed. It took me about two minutes to get dressed, brush my hair, and run a toothbrush across my teeth. Forget the makeup. We were on the trail of a killer.
